What can I do to feel better?

There are several things that can bring on indigestion, and these vary
from person to person. Here are some ways of avoiding the most
common causes.

  • Be kind to your stomach
Foods that are hard to digest, such as fatty and spicy foods, can cause indigestion, although some people get indigestion even after bland meals. Smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol and caffeine, especially on an empty stomach, can cause discomfort.
  • Avoid putting pressure on your abdomen
This can squeeze your stomach contents up into your oesophagus, causing pain and discomfort. Try not to wear tight clothes that hold your stomach in. Don't bend over, rush about or exercise straight after a meal - give your food enough time to go down. Being overweight also puts extra strain on your stomach.
  • Be careful how and when you eat
Eating too much can give some people indigestion, while others can feel bloated when they haven't eaten anything at all. Eat small meals more often and try not to miss meals out. Don't gulp your food down as taking in too much air with your food can overburden your stomach. Avoid meals near bedtime.
  • Try to stay calm
Stress is thought to be a major cause of indigestion. If you feel that stressful situations trigger your indigestion, and you can't avoid them, at least try to eat in a calm environment, and give yourself time to enjoy your meal.
  • Alter your sleeping position
You could also try altering your sleeping position by propping up the head of your bed with some books or bricks.
