What is Indigestion?

Indigestion and dyspepsia are general terms used to describe feelings of discomfort in the stomach or upper abdomen such as stomach ache, trapped wind, feeling full or bloated, a heavy or gassy feeling, burping a lot, a gurgling stomach, a burning sensation in the chest, or feeling sick.

Almost everyone will experience symptoms of indigestion at some time or another. Some people suffer from indigestion every day, others get it only very occasionally. The length of time the discomfort lasts can vary from a few minutes to several hours.

Whenever or however you experience it, indigestion is uncomfortable. It can be worrying and embarrassing and can get in the way of your daily routine.

You can buy remedies from your pharmacist to help reduce the symptoms of indigestion. Medicines you can buy, without a prescription, are known as 'over-the-counter' remedies.
