De-stress not Distress

Stress can be a very positive force in your life. The extra adrenaline can sharpen reactions and prepare the body and mind to deal with extra demands to the best of our ability, by converting the tension into a positive energy.

Stress is only harmful when we cannot control our response to it. Therefore, the key to managing stress is achieving the right balance between tension and relaxation.

One of the most important steps in combatting stress is recognising the early warning signs and taking steps to avoid the "stressors", before the pressure becomes overwhelming. By recognising your stressors, it becomes much easier to deal with your problems. Here are some hints and tips to avoiding your stressors.

Get organised – at home and at work. Lack of organisation is the commonest cause of self-generated stress. Make lists, prioritise.

Time management – it is vital to balance time between home, work and play. Delegate when possible. Don't overstretch yourself - prioritise.

Diet – a well-balanced diet is essential in ensuring that mind and body operate at their optimum. Caffeine, found in coffee, tea and fizzy cola drinks, and nicotine are stimulants, and too much can make you feel more stressed. Avoid excessive amounts of alcohol as this can also exacerbate your condition. If you know you are not getting the right diet or feel under pressure, consider vitamin and mineral supplements.

Exercise – this is one of the key elements in helping to beat stress. Regular exercise can relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression. It burns up excess adrenalin, promotes physical and mental alertness, encourages a refreshing sleep and takes your mind off your problems.

Communicate – if people are aware of your needs, stressful situations can be easily avoided. What you don't express is trapped as pent-up energy in your muscles, which leaves you feeling drained. Also by talking to people you may find solutions to some of your worries.

Relax - de-stressing yourself is within your power. Choose a hobby that works for you such as walking, reading, yoga, listening to music, meditation, massage or deep-breathing exercises. Always try to occupy your mind so that you don't dwell on the problems.

Sleep - getting a good night's sleep is crucial to thinking clearly and behaving rationally.
