Christina Funnell
A graduate in Social Administration, Christina Funnell was for 16 years Chief Executive of the National Eczema Society. During that time she was also Chief Executive of the Skin Care Campaign, an umbrella organisation for dermatology patient support groups. She was a founding member and, until October 1996, Chairman of the Long-Term Medical Conditions Alliance.
Tina has been European Editor of The Patient's Network, a member of the NHS Patient Partnership Steering Group and the Standing Advisory Group on Consumer Involvement in the NHS R&D Programme and was one of the patient representatives at the WHO Meeting in Amsterdam in March 1994 to agree a European Declaration on Patient's Rights. She also attended the WHO Jakarta Conference on Public Health in the summer of 1997.
Christina was patient advisor to the 1994/97 All Party Parliamentary Group on Skin and presented evidence to the Health Select Committee Review of the Drugs Budget and to the Health Select Committee's Enquiry into Children's Health. She has written widely on the importance of the patient perspective. Publications include:- Importance of Patient Self Help Groups - a British Perspective" (Retinoids Today and Tomorrow 41 1995), "Putting Patient's First" (Agenda for Health series, ABPI January 1996), "Patients at the Centre of the Health Service" (Economist, February 1996), "Do we believe the NHS is About Patients?" (Pharmaceutical Times, May 1996), "Voice of Experience" (Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, January 1997).
Tina is now facilitating partnerships between voluntary health organisations and the pharmaceutical industry, is a member of the UKCC for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting Higher Level Practice Project and is also a feasibility consultant to the North Bank Estate in Muswell Hill. She is chairman of the CHIC Advisory Panel and works as an independent consultant, specialising in promoting the need for partnerships between all the players working in healthcare.
