Patricia Wilkie

Patricia Wilkie is a social scientist who has spent most of her working life as a researcher in academic departments of medicine in Edinburgh, Glasgow and London. Research topics have included genetic counselling, social and psychological implications of HIV and AIDS and family doctor prescribing patterns. She has published widely in both medical and social science journals and books, and is also involved in teaching medical and nursing students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Dr Wilkie is a former Chairman of the Patient's Association and has given many lectures on healthcare from the consumer or patient perspective. She has also represented the consumer of patient's view on advisory groups concerned with prescribing in family medicine, the management of the patient with adverse effects following breast radiotherapy, prenatal diagnosis and ethical aspects of HIV and AIDS. Dr Wilkie was appointed in January 1999 to the Committee on Safety of Medicine for a three year period as one of two lay members. 1999 saw the introduction of appointing lay members to the Committee.
